Climate Change: What’s Gender Got to Do With It? How Women Will Lead Us to a More Sustainable Future”
In this presentation, Frances shows climate change and gender as closely linked. Drawing on data and case studies, she illustrates that addressing climate change is addressing gender equity. Women and LGBT+ individuals are vulnerable to climate change, but they/we are also effective actors or agents of change in relation to both mitigation and adaptation. Women have a strong body of knowledge and expertise that can be used in climate change mitigation, disaster reduction and adaptation strategies.

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) Now
In this talk, Frances addresses what the ERA amendment signals about gender in this country, and why it’s still relevant. She argues that we see the same pattern in the 1920s, the 1970s, and now in 2019–charismatic, indefatigable persuaders building on existing support and drawing on the zeitgeist, the spirit of the times, to engage in cultural wars.

100 years of Women’s Suffrage
As an anthropologist interested in issues of education and gender, Frances employs an intersectional lens to examine women’s suffrage and culture, women’s suffrage and children’s education, and finally women’s suffrage and women’s voting. Frances argues that the 19th Amendment is not a triumphant culmination, but one landmark in an ongoing struggle for equal rights for all citizens.

Climate Justice In this presentation, Frances reshapes climate action from a technical effort to cut emissions into an approach that also addresses human rights and social inequality. We examine equity, human rights, collective rights, and the historical responsibilities for climate change and assess impacts in our own communities.
